Saved by the Bell alum Dustin Diamond has been diagnosed with Stage 4 small cell carcinoma, commonly referred to as advanced lung cancer.
Diamond’s rep, Roger Paul, confirmed the news in a written statement on Thursday.
“Dustin has completed his first round of Chemo and his next round is being scheduled. He will also begin his physical therapy soon,” the statement read.
“Dustin is looking forward to spending more time with his girlfriend, playing his bass guitar/video games, as well as making videos for his fans on social media. We are forwarding the letters/cards to him to read in the hospital.”
An insider told Us Weekly the star’s health battle has been very challenging so far.
“It’s not good, it’s not good at all. He’s going to be in the hospital for a while. He’s getting through his treatments now. It’s tough, it’s very hard,” the source said. “He’s going through a lot of pain, but he still keeps his spirits up. Right now, he’s just suffering. He has his ups and downs where he’s great one minute, but then he can be in a lot of pain — tears. It’s such an emotional time.”
“He’s going for testing. He hasn’t been feeling well. He’s at an undisclosed hospital in Florida. We are hoping for a speedy recovery,” Paul said.
Diamond was taken to hospital in early January after experiencing pain “all over his body” and “a general sense of unease.” Sources also revealed that Diamond’s family has a history of cancer — his mother died of breast cancer.
Diamond rose to fame for his role as Samuel “Screech” Powers on Good Morning, Miss Bliss, the Disney sitcom that later became Saved By The Bell. He continued his role from 1989 to 1993 and would play his Screech for a number of reboots. He was also part of the movie Saved By The Bell: Hawaiian Style in 1992 and the sequel Saved By The Bell: The College Years the following year.
