Neve Campbell is the ultimate slasher movie queen, thanks to her starring role in the Scream films. So it’s no surprise she once survived a bear attack.
The actress shared her ordeal while appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show this week, telling the audience she was just 17 when she encountered the bear on a movie set.
“I was playing this role where she’s ‘one with the animals’ and there was a scene where I was getting chased by a bear,” the 48-year-old said. “They brought this bear on set and they first gave me this big bottle of Coke to feed it.”
She was then instructed to “dip your hand in honey and just run” to a tree, so she told as she was told to. That’s when disaster unfolded.
“I dipped my hand in honey and I run to this rock and I turn around and I put my hand out and the bear is not slowing down and he’s not coming for my hand,” she recalled of the scene.
“He grabs me by the leg and he pulls me through the forest. My mother was visiting set and she’s screaming. The whole crew is frozen because nobody can believe what’s happening. All I can think to say is, ‘He’s biting me,’ like it’s not obvious.”
Campbell said the bear eventually let her go when a wrangler threw rocks at the animal.
“It’s silly,'” she concluded of the incident. “We get asked to do silly things.”
