‘Mum has the biggest heart’: Lori Loughlin’s daughters Olivia Jade and Bella defend actress mum after college admission scandal

Lori Loughlin’s two daughters have fiercely defended their actress mother after she was jailed over the controversial college admission scandal in 2020.

In a rare podcast conversation, Olivia Jade and Bella Giannulli spoke about the backlash against Loughlin, 57, and their father Mossimo Giannulli, 58, when they were indicted on federal charges in the college bribery scheme, and expressed their support.

The duo described their Full House star mother as the “nicest person alive” and reflected on how tough it was see her reputation damaged after being jailed for the crime.

“I think just the hardest part of this entire thing was… watching and reading and seeing how horrible the media was to both you and Mum, and actually knowing you guys, and knowing mum has the biggest heart,” Bella, 23, said in the podcast Conversations with Olivia Jade.

“Across the board, I don’t think one person who has ever said something bad about her, because she’s genuinely the nicest person alive.”

The sisters spoke openly about the scandal — which saw Loughlin and Giannulli allegedly pay $500,000 in bribes to have their daughters accepted into the University of Southern California — and told listeners they weren’t trying to portray themselves as victims.

YouTube star Olivia Jade bore the brunt of the online criticism and admitted the controversy and subsequent media circus had a huge impact on her mental health.

“I think it’s really important that I am honest, but I don’t want my honesty to be mistaken as me ever trying to victimise us or what happened in the last few year,” the 22-year-old said.

“It was never fun or enjoyable seeing my name in the headlines… given what it was, and it was all so negative and focussed on Mum and I.”

Olivia Jade and Bella expressed how unfair it was to see Loughlin’s name dragged through the mud and the spotlight solely focussed on her because of her fame.

“I’m not trying to justify or excuse behaviour or throw a pity party,” Olivia said.

“I think, for me, even though I also was getting dragged negatively, it like, didn’t nearly affect me as much as like, seeing mum getting, first of all, having all of this thrown on her. And I think that we can talk about it. I think I want to talk about this. She really took this whole thing on her back, solely.”

The siblings also admitted their family had done the wrong thing when they were admitted into the prestigious university under false pretences.

Olivia Jade and Bella were accepted into USC as recruits for the rowing team, despite the fact neither of the girls were rowers.

“We both have a really clear perspective… we can just say that we’re in the wrong,” Olivia Jade continued

Bella added: “We’re not talking about it to garner pity or be the victims in a situation, but it is real life and what we went through, so it would be weird not to talk about it at all.”

In 2020, Loughlin spent less than two months behind bars for her involvement in the college admissions case. Meanwhile, Mossimo Giannulli was sentenced to five months jail for his role in the scandal.

Fellow actress Felicity Huffman was also indicted in the scandal after she was accused of fixing her daughter Sophia’s SAT test.

Huffman served 11 days at the same prison as Loughlin in 2019.

After being sentenced, Loughlin addressed the court on August 2020, telling the judge, “I made an awful decision.”

“I went along with a plan to give my daughters an unfair advantage in the college admissions process. In doing so, I ignored my intuition and allowed myself to be swayed from my moral compass.”
