Jimmy Kimmel apologises to Quinta Brunson for Emmys comedic bit: ‘I stole your moment’

Jimmy Kimmel has apologised to Quinta Brunson after receiving backlash for “ruining” the screenwriter’s Emmys acceptance speech with a poorly thought out comedic bit.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday, Brunson walked on stage as Kimmel was presenting his opening monologue to the crowd – cutting him off as she made her entrance.

“You know, you’re a little bit early for your interview. It’s after the commercial,” the late-night host told Brunson.

She replied, “I know, but I have a little favour to ask, actually. So you know how you win an Emmy, you only have 45 seconds to do an acceptance speech, which is not that much time? And then you get less time because someone does a dumb comedy bit that goes on a bit too long?”

The Emmy winner then playfully asked Kimmel if she could use the remaining time of his monologue to finish her acceptance speech from Monday.

Following the banter, the duo sat down and Kimmel took time to set the events of Monday’s Emmys straight – apologising to Brunson in the process.

“I do want to explain this for those who may be confused by this,” Kimmel said.

“That was a dumb comedy bit that we thought would be funny. I lost, and then I drank too much, and I had to be dragged out on the stage. And then people got upset.

“They said that I stole your moment, and maybe I did. I’m very sorry if I did do that – I’m sorry I did do that, actually. And also, the last thing I would ever want to do is upset you because I think so much of you, and I think you know that. I hope you know that.”

Brunson accepted Kimmel’s apology and put aside the drama, saying, “I was honestly in such a moment of having a good time, like I won my first Emmy! I was up there happy, and I was wrapped up in the moment.”

At the Emmys on Monday, Kimmel pretended to be unconscious and lay on the floor while Brunson accepted her award.

The late-night host presented the award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series with Will Arnett, who pretended to drag a “drunk” Kimmel on stage, telling the audience that Kimmel “got into the skinny margaritas” after losing the Variety Talk Series award to John Oliver.

As Brunson walked on stage to accept her award, she jokingly tried to get the talk show host off the floor saying, “Jimmy, wake up. I won!” but he didn’t budge.

Plenty of people took to Twitter to voice their irritation at Kimmel’s act.

”If #QuintaBrunson stepping over #JimmyKimmel who literally laid in her spotlight on the day she won an Emmy isn’t a metaphor for what it means to be a WOC [Woman of Colour] in a white man’s world I don’t know what is,” one person tweeted.

Another person added: “Jimmy Kimmel owes Quinta an apology but the messed up part is every image of her accepting her award has his ass in it. White men really are insufferable.”
